Initial Series of Public Meetings
SECTION OF
INDEPENDENT UTILITY NUMBER 11
ROBINSONVILLE TO BENOIT
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT
September 24-27, 2001
Officials from the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the consultant team held four identical public meetings during the week of September 24, 2001 to discuss the project with the public, address the public’s questions, and receive the public’s comments. Potential corridor alternatives were presented using an informal, come and go format for the public’s convenience. Among the displays that were presented for public review and comments were displays on several one-mile wide possible corridor segments that could be connected to develop alternatives. Each person attending these meetings received a project packet containing a brochure and additional project information. The brochure described the project history, work assignment, frequently asked questions and answers to those questions. A copy of the press release for the public meetings, a fact sheet on the establishment of the website, and two fact sheets (I-69 Alternatives Spreadsheet, I-69 Corridor Map) on the meeting’s displays for the initial corridor segments were also contained in the project packet. During each meeting, at approximately 6:00 p.m., brief statements were made by Mr. Claiborne Barnwell, MDOT Environmental Division Engineer, and Mr. Robert Walker, the I-69 Project Manager for the consultant team. Their statements included a welcome and purpose of the meeting. They encouraged the public to discuss the proposed project with the officials from the MDOT, the FHWA, and the consultant team in attendance at the meeting. In their remarks, Mr. Barnwell and Mr. Walker also encouraged the public to ask questions, complete the comment card contained in their project packet, and furnish their comments to the project team.
